Learning about India

As preparation for 'The Journey' - we have been learning about our country India. 

Did you know - the population of India is at least 1.3 billion people?  The capital city is New Dehli.

 The Taj Mahal is a famous monument in India. Approximately 1 million people come to see it each year. It is one of the Seven wonders of the world.

The Bengali tiger is the national animal of India. There are 2226 of these beautiful tigers in India.

  Bengal Tiger stripes are unique to each individual and act just like human fingerprints do.

We enjoyed another wonderful assembly on Friday with our gorgeous buddies. Thanks to Mr Coapman's plastering stilts, we even had the tallest man (Lachie) at school. Mrs Peterson and Mrs Coapman went all out in their tails and top hats, and the children all looked colourful and happy as they shared a rousing rendition of "This is Me". We love this song because it reminds us to believe in ourselves and to step out in confidence - with whatever it is we are doing!

 

 

Counting on

The children in Jellyfish Cove are using 'Counting on' as a strategy to work out addition problems.

If I had 11 Easter eggs and my Granny gave me 8 more.....how many Easter eggs would I have altogether??

Working with our buddies

We always enjoy getting with our buddies - Room 15. Today they came and showed us how to log onto SumDog and how to play the games. That will be really handy for practising our Maths!

Easter in Team Harakeke

On Wednesday, while the teachers were having a planning day, Mrs Sapsford, Mr Halaifonua and Mrs Turner did all kinds of fun Easter activities with Team Harakeke. They iced biscuits, made Easter baskets and Easter bunnies. Later in the day, the children found Easter bunny footprints left on the concrete outside. Funny thing- they could only be discovered by squirting water onto the concrete!

Today we had a visit from the founder of Jump Jam - Brett Fairweather who took us for a brief Jump Jam session on the court. It was great to see everyone moving. Brett has been making Jump Jam videos for schools for 17 years. He taught us one song from his latest Jump Jam DVD #19 - which was very cool - then took us through Witch Doctor - an oldy but a goodie! Jump Jam is a great way to keep fit.

Space Day in Jellyfish Cove

We had a fabulous day with Anne-Marie. She shared with us some of her knowledge about rockets, space shuttles, launching into space and planets. It was fun to dress up in astronaut training suits. We have so much to learn about Space and can't wait to see where this learning takes us. Maybe to Infinity and Beyond!!

Patterning in Jellyfish Cove

We have been practising patterns in Jellyfish Cove. Patterns are everywhere!! They are in our clothing, outside in our playground, on walls, on the concrete - even in our food!
Some patterns follows an A,B,A,B pattern like this -

The Sunflower that went Flop

The Sunflower that went Flop!
When we arrived back at school, after the holidays, we were really surprised to find a huge sunflower had grown outside our room. We watched the flower grow until finally it bloomed. It was as big as a dinner plate.

We watered the sunflower everyday - but eventually it went 'flop!' The birds came to eat the seeds. We could hear them chirping outside our classroom!

April - You wouldn't believe it! When we finally took the head off the sunflower - it was way bigger than a dinner plate. It was around 350 cm wide!

We will keep the seeds for next season and see what happens then!

We were really pleased to present in assembly this last week. Our item was "We're all in this together" which celebrated our sense of belonging not just to Jellyfish Cove, but to Hoon Hay School and Aotearoa.  We are excited to be working alongside our buddy class from  Te Kanawa's Cove - Room 15

Welcome to Jellyfish Cove 2018

Hooray for 2018! Welcome to all the new jellyfish in Jellyfish Cove!!

This is our class blog for 2018. This blog is a place where the students and Mrs Coapman will share the teaching and learning that takes place in Jellyfish Cove throughout the year. 
Our blog will be updated regularly with things that are happening in our space, including photos of our work and adventures that we have been up to.

Our Visit to the Art Gallery

Today the children from Jellyfish Cove took the bus to the Christchurch Art Gallery. We looked at the work of various artists as preparation for our own Art Exhibition. The tutors - Bianca and Sarah introduced us to some paintings by Bridget Reilly - an English artist. She used pointillism to create images of landscapes. 

Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of colour are applied in patterns to form an image. We used this technique to create our own works of art.
